The Hunger Games is novel set in a post-apocolyptic world called Panem, which
consists of twelve districts each with its own purpose. In order to maintain
order within Panem the Capitol puts on an annual hunger games. This is where
one boy and one girl ages 12-18 from each district are chosen to fight, in an
arena, to the death. The winner gets to live the rest of their life in peace
with their family.
The novel begins on the morning of the reaping of the 74th annual
Hunger Games in District 12, the poorest district of them all. As the reaping
begins and a young girl is chosen, her older sister Katniss decides to
volunteer as tribute. The family gets a quick, emotional goodbye before the two
tributes are sent off for training.
The tributes from all the 12 districts go through training and
interviews before the games begin. It is then that Katniss and the other
District 12 tribute Peeta begin to grow closer by staying with each other at
all times. Through skill and help from her trainer, Katniss and Peeta become
the final two in the arena. To rebel against the Capitol, the two decide to eat
poisoned berries so that there will be no winner. At the last minute, President
Snow decides that both of the tributes from District 12 will be crowned
victors. Little did they know this would change their lives forever.
